My name is Lyu Zhangjing and I study (am studying) in George Mason University. And my major is Management in School of Business. My department offers many academic programs. In graduate programs, my department have Executive MBA, MBA, JD MBA Dual Degree, MS in Accounting, Accelerated MS Accounting, MS in Management, MS in Management of Secure Information Systems, MS in Real Estate Development, MS in Technology Management, Business Analytics Certificate, CIO Certificate and Forensic Accounting Certificate programs. Since I study in MS in Management, I want to give an introduction about my department. According to the university website, “The management major focuses on giving students the skills necessary to set the direction for organizations in a changing world and bring people together to achieve objectives”.[1] To achieve this goal, (the) Management department offers four modules ( in each of) which module we have 3 courses. And we must reach the required GPA, which is 3.25 in total.
These courses are required courses. So, our major doesn’t have elective courses. And we don’t need to register courses by ourselves, the advisors will do that for us. The Management department have (has) 20 professors and lecturers, and chairperson of Management is Richard Klimoski. I can’t find the secretaries. In all these professors, professor Kravitz is my most interested one. Because of his different academic experience, I would like to analysis (analyze) his academic life. He is a professor in (the) management department, and teaches organizational behavior and diversity in organizations courses. Even though he has (the)PhD degree in Social Psychology, he doesn’t have any business degree or management degree. So, why can he teach the organizational behavior and diversity in organizations courses? After he got his Social Psychology’s PhD, he chose to studied Industrial-Organizational Psychology. Then, he became a postdoctoral fellow in Bowling Green State University. It clearly shows that, Professor Kravitz wants to use psychology knowledge on industrial management. In order to achieve this goal, he applied for teacher in (a teaching position at) Rice University after worked as an independent consultant for 6 years. He worked as a lecturer in Rice University from 1996 to 1998. During these two years, he wrote 6 journal articles and published on Journal of Applied Psychology, International Journal of Selection and Assessment, Journal of Applied Social Psychology, Research in Higher Education and Employee Responsibilities and Rights Journal. It’s obvious that Professor Kravitz had moved the focus from psychology to company management area. Furthermore, it is indicted that he had this ability to publish research in academic journals in the early years of his career life. And that shows us if we have interest in an area, we must develop our writing skill and be ready to send our research to academic journals. In the management area, this professor had published his articles on Journal of Managerial Issues, Academy of Management Journal and Journal of Organizational Behavior in recent years. These articles are about the management issues in different places and some problems in organizations. Since his major is (was) psychology, he interested in diversity management, which means to use different ways to manage people base on staff’s background, gender, age and professional field and so on. In this area, he can use psychology skills to profile employees base on their background, gender, age and professional field. Then give a suit way to manage these staff. Professor Kravitz has attended many Conference Presentations (over 60 Conference Presentations), such as Organizational diversity training programs in 2006. He also organized and chaired three conference professional development workshops, which are (were) “Ramping up our game! How we can do a better job teaching Diversity”, “Teaching courses on ‘Diversity in organizations’” and “Designing and teaching courses on "Diversity in organizations’". It shows that he devotes himself to the diversity management area, and spends lots of time pursue (pursuing) this topic. It tells us that we must concentrate on one specific direction, which you really are interested in. So we can focus on it rather than divert our attention too many directions in the academic area.
