Article Analysis
Lyu Zhangjing G01050083 Read and understand articles is a very important skill, especially for graduate students. Since graduate students need to cite many journal articles to support their research, understanding the structure and the information in these articles are necessary. As a graduate student of management, I also need to read many articles published in well-known journals. So, in this paper, I will use Harris’ Rhetorical Concepts to analyze it purpose, scope, exigence and so on. Then, I will closely analyze its introduction by using Three Move method. In the end, I will analyze the structure of this article. The title of this article is “Ethnic Diversity Management In Theory And Practice” (Aigner, 2014). Firstly, I will find study object, scope, exigence, purpose, driving question, existing studies and relevance by using Harris’ Rhetorical Concepts method. She selected five companies in Upper Austria, by interviewed HRM experts and managers in these companies to finish the “Layer One Research”. Then, the “Layer Two Research” is to interview 20 employees who have (the) ethnic minority background.[1] Since diversity management has often been consider as a “double-edged sword”, especially in ethnic diversity management, some scholars argued that it is “luxury and not a necessity”(Brock& Sanchez, 1996).[2] Her purpose was to provide answers of a research question, which is “how are theoretically conceived models of ethnic DM implemented in practice within organisations, and how are such practices, measures and their results seen and rated by those involved and affected?” (Aigner, 2014).[3] But, this article do (does) not has (the) driving question.[4] However, she collected her data just from Upper Austria. She has not considered other countries’ managers and employees, which can be consider (considered) as a scope in discuss (discussing) ethnic diversity management questions.[5] Besides, Aigner highlighted many researchers in her article. For example, she concluded the “double-edged sword” idea by reading Basset’s (2005) and Hanappi’s (2007) articles about advantages of diversity management and Lorbiecki &Jack’s (2007) article about disadvantages of it.[6] Furthermore, Aigner’s study is relevant to managers and employees because it gave some specific recommendations for the improvement of ethnic diversity management. So, it can benefit to (no to) all related parties.[7] Secondly, this article shows the three moves that Swales and Feak (331) illustrate in their book Academic Writing for Graduate Students. And the writer will use the Three Move Method to analyze the moves in the introduction. Since the introduction in this article is too short, the abstract is being consider(considered) in this part. Firstly, move 1a shows that the topic being researched is important. However, it cannot find (be found) in the introduction. And move 1b provided some previous research of this topic. This is evident when the author state Basset’s (2005), Hanappi’s (2007), Lorbiecki’s (2000), Wrench’s (2007) and other scholars’ ideas in her article. Secondly, Move 2 is indicating a gap in the previous research. In this article, the second sentences of introduction provides a good example of it when the author stated “While Bridgstock et al. (2010) advocate DM as an HRM tool with the aim of …… to strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the internal and external organisational environment.” Finally, Move 3 is when the article outlines the purpose or the nature of the present research. This is seen when Aigner indicated that, “The article aims to provide answers towards an important research question – ‘how are theoretically conceived models of ethnic DM implemented in practice……by those involved and affected?’” Generally, the article follows introduction, methods, results and discussion (IMRD) pattern. Although the titles of these are not same as the IMRD pattern, it generally follows the same outline. In abstract and introduction, Aigner provided a briefly introduction of this topic and showed her purpose. After the introduction, she gave the methodology of the reported case study. By indicting the details of it, the author shows her way to get data and how she conducted her research. The article then discusses the empirical findings, which is results, followed by a conclusion. The type of research conducted is very unique because it used mixed methods to analyze data. Aigner using quantitative and qualitative analysis in Research Layer One and Research Layer Two respectively. So, it can show different angles to the readers. By doing so, the readers can know both parties’ ideas about the topic, which can make it easy to understand. In this article, it shows many figures in the Ethnic Diversity Management part. From these figures, I can easily know that the workforce percentage in each industry, and the main reason occurred the communication problems in (the) EDM area. Moreover, the format this article used is APA format. So, the author cited many other prior research by paraphrasing and direct quoting their words. However, most of citations were paraphrased. This article is easy to understand because it has clear structure. So, it gives a good example on how to organize scholar article.
